The programme is structured over three distinct in-person weeks, March, May, and September and will also include online support starting in January of your chosen year. This online support will remain available until the final week of the course, which covers all aspects of canine training, with a focus on scent detection.
This initiative will provide online guidance that introduces various essential elements, such as indication training, the use of a clicker, fluency, latency, and reinforcement schedules, to name a few from our detailed programme. Additionally, we will discuss strategies to foster an essential emotional connection with scents and explore other engaging topics together.
Our scheduled Zoom meetings aim to maintain momentum and provide insights into systematic search strategies presented by our esteemed experts, Dr. Rob and Karen. Together, they bring an impressive 60 years of operational experience with the Metropolitan Police, in addition to engaging in discussions about Dr. Rob’s Doctorate in Scent Detection.
The team is also excited to facilitate Q&A sessions, which will give participants the opportunity to explore their training further and receive guidance on record-keeping, search training, and many other aspects to help them achieve their City & Guilds certification.
One Course, three phases, plus FULL online support
The key highlights of our programme
During the first week, you will learn the foundational steps for training a scent-detection dog. You will explore Dr. Rob’s 'Venn Diagram of Search,' which simplifies the entire process, as well as many other aspects of detection-dog training. Throughout this week, you will discover various training methods, as we believe that 'one size does not fit all' when it comes to scent detection training.
The second week is focused on assessment schedules, scenario-based training for your clients, and systematic search techniques. We will explain how to search buildings, areas, routes, and vehicles, providing valuable information so you can coach clients to get the best results when entering competitions.
In the final week, you will receive training that will assist you in designing and developing your own scent detection course. The lessons will cover a range of topics, including adult learning theories, effective classroom skills, and how to create a safe learning environment for both dogs and humans. Additionally, you will continue with practical training to improve your dog-handling skills and enhance your training knowledge.
